Erotic???

Bygbaby.com Mindspill

When I post floral photos on my Flickr page, I usually get a ton of comments about my composition, colors & subject, but lately, I have been getting comments like, “this looks erotic”, or “this very sensual” or “So close, it becomes erotic”.

Last week, when I went to my local farmer’s market I picked up this Celosia so that I could a) enjoy it & b) photograph it. It was not until I was done photographing & processing my images that I got the whole sensual or erotic floral eroticism out of my work.

I found this image & the companion images to kina erotic & kinda sexy even? I think it is the color contrast but I could be wrong or have a weird sex fetish ready to pop ou, otr maybe I just have issues in general???

I'm What You Need

I was listening to Chanté Moore when I processing these images & it seemed to be a good match for the title & image.  Seductive song, seductive lyrics.

Bygbaby.com Mindspill

Bygbaby.com Mindspill

Like Jill Scott, Chanté knows how to make a man feel good (and give him green banana syndrome) when listening to their music.  In a silly schoolboy kinda way, I feel like they are talking to me (but only during the love and oochie coochie songs).

I Asked And...

Talk about sowing seeds.  Yesterday I questioned, “Why come no one called me this morning and offered me the photographic opportunity of a lifetime.”  Well I guess someone in the universe was listening to me because today I got a phone call.

Tony Agee (the graffiti artist that tricked out my MacBook Pro several months ago) hit me up & told me that he was curating an art show at the end of August & requested that I submit some work for display & sale.

Anyway, I can submit up to 4 pieces & I have selected 2 images, The Wave & Flight of the Syrphid Fly.

I need help picking 2 additional pieces, so that means that I need your help choosing.  Check out my contact sheet (click here) & give me your feedback, please.

Thx!!!

Head to the Sky

I had a great & positive week here in Orlando @ the PS conference.  Right now I am on information overload but that’s OK.  “Yall’s boy” (line barrowed from Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (Kwame’s momma)) is armed with lots of use tidbits, & new gadgets & looking forward to putting it all to use!

Bygbaby.com Mindspill

I have to wake up @ 3am tomorrow to get my red eye home & believe me, it is going to be some red eyes going on cuz I am tired as fuck right now & still need to eat & finish packing. My room got very messy & that is funny because it is just me so I guess I am not as neat as I claim to be.  Already in advance, I’m hoping that I leave nothing.

This weekend is going to be non-stop!  I got my much needed loc appointment tomorrow, & clothes to wash, Sunday I am assisting a Alvin Haas (bad ass fashion photographer) Sunday on a wedding themed shoot for Ambassador Magazine, so I am hoping I can sneak a nap in sometime before I have to go back to the plantation Monday.

Holla!

Dont Look @ Me That Way

Today, Olivia & I had a ghetto style but fun photo shoot in the dining room. She was a very willing model & listened as I told her to “work it”, “give me fierce”, “smile with your eyes”, “too much chin” & “no pouty lips” all in ANTM fashion.

Soon, Olivia, Sade & Amelia will get sick of me asking them to strike a pose.

A Little News w/Some T&A

Here are a few images that I captured at the 2008 Detroit Dirty Show (an erotic art exhibition). If you are a people watcher like me then you would have enjoyed the visual orgy of interesting sites.

This event marked my last photo assignment with the Detroit Fashion Pages for a while. I sat down, did the math & figured that currently, this is not worth the time spent (although I love the social high life). Not only, that when I shared my decision with the family, Olivia was happy & said that I could spend more time with the family. I was proud to hear my baby break it down like that.

Another factor that also played into my decision was that I was offered a photo editor position back in Sept/Oct 07& I was so excited. Well after waiting months for it to materialize, it never happened. That news was very disappointing especially after I was basically promised that it would go into effect Jan 08.

The cool thing overall is overall is there are no burned bridges & I left the door open for me to be available for special assignments & maybe some gigs in the summer.

My plate will be totally cleared once I finish this last website, which should be this week. At that point, I will be able to concentrate more time on this damn math class.

Pending Work, Maybe Red, What???

Today, I officially kicked my new photography project, featuring my Ikea “Alexander Visitor Chair”, that I copped last spring from the “As Is” bin.

When I got the chair last soring, I was so struck by the color that I did not even think about where I was going to put it at home. I guess, you can say this is a good example of me not being able to control my spending.

Anyway, so I got the chair home & just sat it at the top of my basement steps, where it collected dust and everything else for months. No wait, I think we did use it once when we needed an extra chair at the dinner table. And I did use it for a photo test last summer that came out very well.

So over the last few weeks, after attending a friend of mines photo art exhibit, I started to think that I could do this, next thing my idea was born. I had decided to use my Alexander Visitor chair as a focal point for my exhibit (if I get one/can make it happen).

My plan for the exhibited photos is to have each feature the chair out & about & in different situations, with & without people. At this point, I am going to do several months of work to get a collection of photos that I feel are representative of my style & exhibit worthy.

Like I said, today was the official jump off point & I did a series of 20+ shots & here is my favorite, titled "Passerby". This shot was taken at the Law School of the University of Michigan aka “the law quad”, & the ghost in the background is yours truly.

Pimp My Macbook Pro

Yesterday I met with master Detroit graffiti artist Tony “Shades” Agee to pimp out my Macbook Pro. In less than 30 minutes, my laptop took sexy to a new level.

I was not in the market for a custom design on my laptop but after I saw what Shades did to his Macboook, I had to have it.

Bygbaby.com Mindspill

I met Shades last summer (07) @ the eclectic furniture store “Mezzanine”, while shooting a party for the Detroit Fashion Pages.

Little did I know that this local brotha was a renown international graffiti artist who has done work for the World Cup, The Detroit International Auto Show, Wu Tang Clan & Daimler Chrysler to name a few.

My boy is making it happen!!!

Spank My Monkey

So I had a great but exhausting as fuck weekend. My photo shoot was great, I have 70 jars of Quench Essentials on the way to LA. It’s Monday night & I still have not started my paper that’s due Wednesday & I am spinning out of control with all of these commitments. This week will be less intense as I have decided not to photograph any events/people so that I can have some family time, clear my gardens & catch my damn breath.

In a few, I have to get off the damn internet to get my mind right to pull this paper together. But before I go, I want to introduce you to a new friend I meet Saturday while shooting a Detroit Institute of the Arts FJC party at the ultra hip & chic furniture store Mezzanine.

My new friend’s name s Chiba & he is a real cutie. When we made eye contact, I knew we would be pals forever. After I paid for him, the relationship was cemented.

Chiba may look familiar to you if your parents purchased expensive Danish toys for you as a child and you will remember that he was/is known as a Rosendahl Monkey originally made by famed silversmith & toy maker Kay Bojesen. If you on the other hand grew up broke living the Ghetto life like me (or kinda) then Chiba is something new & a great toy adults who love toys or bourgeoisie YBP who loves to floss & flaunt bullshit.

After I negotiated down to a more Negro friendly price, Joe, the owner of Mezzanine told me of the story of this little throw back to the 1950’s & I was more excited about the purchase.

So after Chiba was bagged up & I was out the door, the only thing I thought about was like what am I gonna name him & what would I say if Suite Suzy asked how much I paid for him. Well last night she asked & I blew it off the way I always do when I spend foolishly. After no good response from me, she was like I know you & I know you paid some money for that! Then I turned the conversation to the kids & was hey like kids, who wants to help me name my monkey (she was still looking at me with that look).

It was funny hearing their responses but we came up with nothing. Tonight during dinner, Olivia & I brainstormed & we came up with Chiba. I like it & it’s fun just like him.

The name that I came up with originally & only shared with Suite Suzy was Spank…. Get it; Spank, the monkey…….. Suite Suzy was like hell no; do not name him that! Now we are all settled on the name now I think Chiba needs a friend, so you know what that means. Not sure if I will get another but I am thinking, which is not always a good thing.…

On a final toy note, I am going t trip you out with my next toy friend photo. I’m waiting for him to arrive any day not. I will give you a hint. My latest in real life had you Hypnotized in the 90’s baby BAY-BAY! Uhh.

Am I alone in this toy thing. Do you have any & sex toys do not count!

I’m a Winner Today

First off, I am excited to announce that I won a “Motif’d Challenge” in one the Motif'd Challenges Flickr group today for a photo that I took during my birthday dinner date with Suite Suzy. I love this Flickr group & it's one of my favorites!

Bygbaby.com Mindspill

What you see here is the marvelous lemonade cake topped with a lemon gummy wedge & fresh raspberry served with fresh strawberry sorbet. This is a periodic desert served at Gratzi Ristorante downtown Ann Arbor, MI.

Secondly, I was contacted by my boss Niki Johnson, the publisher of the Detroit Fashion Pages (my side photography gig) & was asked to come on board as the new Photo Editor.

OMG, when she asked me, I was like damn, I’m really just a Nigga with a camera & a dream but I guess I am much more (we both laughed!!!).

After the terms are worked out, I will make my final decision & move from there. From our initial conversation, I am thinking YES, YES, YES. And yes, I will still keep my fulltime job, shit I need benefits up in this bitch.

So after all this jumped off I called Suite Suzy & Cousin Dee to share my news; they were excited for me. After I had lunch, I gave Cousin Dee another call & told her that she was talking to a real winner, she then said fuck you & hung up in my face. Aren’t best friends great!

Anyway, now I can afford to get another $18 water bottle!!! LOL

Last but not least, I did my official non ghetto photo shoot for an article article published in the Detroit Fashion Pages last week & had so much fun working with the crew & the subject. Today I got the email that the piece was online & I got so excited to see my images coupled with the journalism.

If you are interested in knowing about a rising Detroit mover & shaker, please check out the piece on my girl Melinda Anderson.

By: Nicole Brown

As the Michigan Opera Theater opens a new season with the world premier of "Cyrano", Dr. David DiChiera's original opera, there are tons of preparations underway to ensure that patrons experience the French provincial countryside from the beginning of their three day journey to the end. Heading up the design of the opening weekend's events is event designer extraordinaire and industry veteran Melinda Anderson of Colonial Party Event Rental.

If the name sounds familiar it should. In the past five years, Anderson has taken the event world in Michigan by storm by transforming local venues into flights of fancy using her signature dashes of bright, bold colors and utilizing lights in unique ways. Most recently patrons who attended the Michigan Opera Theater's Encore group's Bravo Bravo! event, which Anderson chaired were privy to not just another fundraiser, but a multi-sensory extravaganza. This year's event which included the traditional restaurant and bar buffets provided by the area's leading restaurants, but featured a wide variety of Metro Detroit talent including three DJ's, two bands, a violinist, a singer, a psychic duo all inside of what seemed to be the biggest club in the world. Using modern furniture, lighting, a dizzying array of flowing fabrics and a volunteer staff of 100, the Detroit Opera House ceased to exist that evening and the ultimate home of cool was erected. The Party is Over But...

OK, so last night was my party & I am still on cloud 9 with good feelings. Suite Suzy & I worked our asses off to prepare the house & the food so this morning we are chilling taking it easy especially with the kids away.

13 of my closest friends were able to make it for food, drinks & shit talking galore. The food was on point of course but I was I wish I took pictures before things got hectic.

Basically we served fried chicken wings, Belgian waffles, chorizo empanadas, spinach & cheese mini turnovers, Suite Suzy’s famous caramel cashew brownies (my absolute favorite), & my wonderful vodka berry punch.

The party jumped off a little early when BFF (best friend forever) BFB (best friend Brion) showed up early with balloons (a good friend brings balloons). Later the rest of the gang blew up the spot & the party was jumping. We ended around 2 & for the 1st time, the house was not totally trashed & I was not fucked up on a liquor based high (no hangover today!!!).

The best surprise of the night was when I opened my gift from Zana & saw a limited edition Godwin Rabbit doll. I 1st saw the doll in her hip-hop shop last week & asked to buy & she told me no & I begged my ass off but the answer was still no. Later I got home to see if I could get one online & the answer was no cuz it was nowhere to be found. So I will cherish this gift always.

My punch was a big hit & I had to make 2 batches, I mean we were sucking that shit down like it was going out of style. I am happy to report that none of my guest were pulled over & charged with a DUI.

Friends at the party all asked the recipe to my punch & I shared it but of course with no measurement cuz I just pour so I thought I would mention it here.

Vodka Berry Punch:
- 2 cartons of Minute Maid “Cherry Limeade”
- 1.5 cups 100% pomegranate juice
- 7-up for fizz
- Very generous splash of strawberry Stolichnaya
- Splash of Chambord
- 2 bags of fresh frozen mixed berries

Here is the little thank you follow up that I sent out to my friends this morning after waking up to NO HANGOVER.

Anyway, I’m out & thanks for all of the well wishes!

You Never Know Who You Will Meet

This past Saturday, my oldest daughter Olivia (click this link) & I hung out at the Peoples Art Fair in Detroit. The goal of the day was for us to both take some awesome pictures, chillax, people watch etc.

The art fair was awesome & there was so much to see, actually some of it was too much to see but you know how art is.

So we are making our way around slowly & I notice someone trying to get my attention, then when I was with it & looked up, I saw it was my blogging/online friend & fellow photographer Dr. Lester K Spence. He was there with the same purpose as us.

This was an awesome surprise cuz I hardly meet or see online friend in the flesh.

We had an awesome time chatting about people, life & photography, I wish I could do this more often with other like minded people. My new love (photography) is such a bridge builder!!!

While at the Art Fair, I notice several local photographers peddling there photo wares which gave me a shot of confidence cuz now I know I can do it. So next summer, watch out Detroit, I am coming to sale my shit!

Lester, how was that reunion??? Olivia wants to know!!! LOL

Anyway, here is my one of my favorite shots of the day which I think had a subliminal message.

What does this piece say to you? My first thought was like, wow, a black child holding the key to the future.

You can see my other shots from the art fair on my Flickr page here & you can see Lester's shots here.

Olivia's shots are coming soon & she cannot wait. For now, I need to do this damn paper!

My Name Is...

I spotted these really cool my name is tags @ the 2007 Detroit Urban Craft Fair on many of the workers & just had to have one for myself. I found out that Amy Cronkite a local artist/crafter designed these especially for DUCF staff. So I kinda begged her to make me a few. A few weeks later, my narcissistic fantasy became reality & I now have my own personal my name is tags.

The tags are made of shrinky dink material & she hand writes the name. If you like these, they are only 5 bucks so check Amy on her blog @ Make Out Goods

I Love Danger Kitty: A Little Family Drama Rant

Today I have to run to Cleveland for the funeral for one of my brother’s (Topot) cousins (we have different dads). His cousin ws murdered by her babies daddy a little over a week ago & there has been much drama surrounding this as you can imagine.

You see my brother has some mental challenges & sometimes I just have to do what I have to for him. Shit, I really do not want to make this trip but I have to + my mother ran a guilt trip on me.

What is making this trip something that I have to do is because Topot’s dad was released from prison after years for murdering a man who was looking at his “lady”. He shanked this mutha with a knife in the name of ghetto love. Now he is reformed I guess.

Anyway, my brother has not seen his dad since 1978 (meaning since he was 2). Over the years, that have talked a few times & my brother has longed for a relationship.

Since his release, my mother is acting like she wants to see him more than anyone. It kinda nasty, but I can hear in her voice that she may want to break off that for old times piece.

What makes this extra fucked is that he (oh yeah, his name is Sir Skip) tried to kill my mom like twice & used to beat the living hell out of her during their marriage. I never witnessed any of this but heard the horrific stories. And now she wants to skin grin up in his face.

I swear sometimes I do not understand woman who suffer(ed) from Stockholm Syndrome especially my own mother. (end of family drama rant)

Totally switching topics now, last week I was at the Detroit Urban Craft Fair taking some shots for fun & spotted several interesting things & people. On of the most interesting things I saw were this little strange knit cats.

They were kinda scary & fun but not fun enough for me to buy one!

Bygbaby: Fallen Angel?

Cousin Dee took this photo of me at this huge abandoned warehouse on the east side of Detroit this weekend. For some reason my face kept coming out darker than the rest of me no matter how she adjusted the settings.

I started to pitch it but decided to play with it to see if I could make something cool & this is what I came up with. I guess you can say I am representing some type of urban angel with ghetto tendencies.

I don't know what I was thinking when I walked up in there with my nice linen slacks & icy white Adidas Forums.

My 3rd Eye is Busy

Since I got my new camera, I find myself looking at things around me differently. The littlest & sometimes the strangest things seem beautiful when before I would have just bypassed them. I guess after spending all of this money on the camera & lenses, I have formed some sort of 3rd eye. More & more, I am starting to feel the need to keep my camera bag & tripod in the car at all times just in case I get inspired while out & about.

If I had my things in the car this morning, I would have been a little late for work because I found beauty in a small dilapidated barn. I spotted the barn on an alternative route I took in order to avoid 1 of the 3 constructions projects near me & I’m happy I figured out this detour. Soon as I passed it, I was like shit, I need my camera & during the course of my day, I thought about it a few times so I decided to go check it out after I ran some errands after work.

So I get off work & immediately hit the ATM, visited my baby brother (reason for the ATM stop) & headed home to get my shit & hit the road. It’s now about 725pm & I am setting up on the side of the road near the barn & hoping no one says get the hell out of here, or worse (I was kinda in the country where people don’t quite look like me. 20 minutes later I jump back in the car satisfied with what I captured & headed home to look at the real deal on my beautiful Mac Book Pro.

So now it’s just after 830 & I’m at the table slamming down dinner & marveling at what I captured with my 3rd eye. I guess if I had my camera with me this morning, I could have saved myself sometime but in looking back, the lighting was better in the evening + I had time to think about how I wanted to capture it.

I think now, I will do some type of barn series because I do find them attractive especially when they are painted red. Luckily I do not have far to go because barns are all over the place in my neck of the woods.

Here’s a small challenge for you; looking at the image below, tell me what you see in 6 words or less.

If you are in Michigan & like barns, then check this event out!

Logo Fight

A little over 2 weeks ago Afrobella announced an open logo design contest for her blog. When I initially read it, I was temped to enter but I was like noooo, I am not a competitive person & I hate losing.

Weeeeeell, after a few days of thinking about it, I gave into myself & created a logo to submit for the contest. It took me about 6 hours (off & on) to get it exactly how I wanted it.

The contest ends Aug 5th & I am nervous but at the same time I am excited for Afrobella because I love her blog, as I’m a frequent reader.

Although her blog covers a lot of beauty stuff, she also covers some great history pieces & pop culture pieces that I enjoy reading.

So now I have about 2 weeks before the contest ends & a winner is announced so my fingers are crossed! Which ever way things go, I am positive that she will have something really good but my boo is really wanting me to win so she can get the $50 Sephora gift certificate & other goodies. I just want to be praised for the world to see for being a great designer LOL.

Here is what I did, let me know what you think (don't be afraid to be honest, I am a byg boy)!

New York City: I Don't Know Why I Love You (Reprise)

As promised, here are some snapshots from my last trip to NYC. I think they came out really good so I am excited about them. Working with this new camera is no joke when you are trying to capture the right amount of light, color, motion & depth of field. I truly understand why “real” photographers get paid!

Just a quick warning before you jump into my imagery feast: You may see brief nudity (nipples) so if you read the corresponding post below, well…

Please enjoy, I know I did when I was snapping away.

If you cannot see, you may need the latest Flash player.

New York City: I Don't Know Why I Love You

My post title is inspired by Gil Scott-Heron's "New York City" cut from his "It's Your World" album 1976.

“New York City, I don’t know why I love you
Maybe it’s because you're mine

Like so many others, I found it all to easy to stand off at a distance & criticize

But there ain’t nothing wrong with the city
Just some people been wrong there like every where else

New York City, I don’t know why I love you
Could be that you remind me of myself”

So I have been away for a few days on but now I am back up in this bitch with a vengeance & fully energized.

While I was out, I was in NYC on a lover’s getaway with my boo & now wife of 8 damn years. My 8th anniversary was last Thursday (07/12) & it was the best ever!

Suite Suzy & I always vacation for our anniversary & for the last 5 years we have been doing it in NYC. Yes I know, I know every year the same ole thing, right? Wrong! Each trip that we have had to NYC has been different from the others as we always discover new places, try different hotels, restaurants & neighborhoods, so it’s like we go on a different adventure in NYC every year.

This year we decided to go at a very slow & relaxed pace just kinda doing whatever happened & that is exactly what we did & it was fun being there without any concrete plans. Actually we had one plan that was confirmed & that was to hang out with Cluizel but everything else was up for grabs.

To spare you from all of the boring details, I’m just going to touch on trip highlights which made this trip one to remember.

Before I get into any of this I want to note that this year’s anniversary trip theme song was “Funkanova” (click to listen) by Wood, Brass & Steel. Every trip has to have a theme song!

The Highlights:

Meeting Friends:

  • Daniel Marie – On our 1st night in the city we decided to go out for a few mojitos before dinner at the Bar in Victor’s Cuban Café (If you love mojitos, you have not had one until you had one @ Victor’s). So we perch at the bar near this seemingly quiet guy but soon as we placed out order, we found out that his ass was not quiet at all. The local bar fly introduced himself as Daniel Marie, who had a heavy European accent. He later revealed that he was from Geneva, CH & explained his fondness of yodeling.

We actually sat and talked with Daniel Marie for over an hour & had some fun discussions on politics, the world cup (which I knew nothing about) & men pissing on toilet seats. We usually do not meet to many New Yorkers who engage in conversations especially in Manhattan so kicking it with Daniel Marie was really cool.

  • Michelle aKa Cluizel – A little over a month ago we agreed to meet on my trip & I am so happy that we did! Cluizel is just as much fun in person as she is online. At first I was nervous cuz I never meet any online friends so to help present a clean image of myself, I decided not to be as ghetto as I am online, but that all went down the tubes after my 1st drink at the Negril Village, which is where we met for dinner. Cluizel, Suite Suzy & I turned that bitch out, laughing & talking more shit than a little bit.

After dinner we hit the Village where the outing took a somewhat strange twist just before 9pm. We went to the village because the day before I purchased a new bead for my nipple ring & was having a hard time getting the new one in so I needed to go back the piercing parlor to have it put in. We get to the parlor, explain my dilemma & the weird sista working there hooked me up & minutes later my red new nipple bead was in place & I was happy. Once it was in Suite Suzy put me on the spot & requested that I show everyone my large nipple & nipple ring to which I was like no, because I was not sure if NYC was ready to see my nipple but the next thing I know, my shit was up & the nipple was out! The only thing running through my mind as my nipple was on display was OMG, Cluizel must think I am really out of my mind.

Once all of the nipple drama was over, we all decided to get a genital piercing because they had a special & Cluizel demanded to go first, we were like ok! Just kidding, what of kind of people do you think we are??? After all of the nipple-based fun we decided to head to Times Square for some desert at Cold Stone Creamery one of my favorite places to be gluttonous. Shortly afterward we parted ways until the next time. Cluizel thanks for being you!!!

Cluizel if you are reading, click here: mmmmmmmmm

Hotel, Leisure & Relaxation:

  • Dream - Somehow I found out about this hotel and after I saw the website, I knew this would be the hotel to help make this trip over the top. Suite Suzy read a few reviews and they were not that great and I almost changed my mind but I said fuck it, let’s just do it.

The Dream hotel had me hooked as soon as I hit the lobby and saw this huge saltwater fish tank, floor to ceiling & larger than life bronze statue of an Asian warrior with 2 bitches attached to him, one on either side. Unfortunately out room was not read yet so we had to kill like 4 hours so we had a little breakfast & ran a few errands to pass the time.

It’s now about 130pm & we are walking into our room & it looked just like it did online. The bed was like floating on this blue light, there was a massive flat panel TV on the wall & bottom line is I was just like yes! This is what I am talking about! Because we had to get up at the ass crack of dawn to get our flight we were pretty tired especially when you factor in we got very little sleep the night before, so we decided to take a nap. Next thing you know, it was almost 4 hours later, then about 2 hours after that we get a ring at the door. I look out the peep hole & see a cleaning lady so I opened the door. She explained that she was there for turn down service & asked if we needed anything so we got a few extra towels & before she left, she gave us 2 big apples & wished us a good night.

I had never been to a hotel that did turn down service before so it was a real treat especially on days we stayed gone for pretty much the entire day. The staff were all extra courteous & professional, with all this said, we will mos def stay at the Dream again!!!

  • Washington Square Park - This is our park & a must do each time we go. WSP is always jumping with activity and I must say that the people watching some of the best if you are into people watching. It was just nice to be there sipping on a cold bottle of water, sitting under that shade having fun telling stories with my boo as life was happening around us.

  • Chelsea Market - We found out about this place watching the Food Network & come to find out, this is where the Food Network is located. The Chelsea Market was busier that a beehive & filled with wonderful sights & smells. If you like baked goods, you would think that you died and went to heaven & if you are a diabetic, I caution you!

This place almost has everything from a few grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries & little exotic boutiques to name a few. The Chelsea Market is the type of place that makes you want to live in NYC so you can go there everyday to get fresh foods.

  • NYC Botanical Garden - OMG, you know I love flowers & all things botanical so this was a must do. Suite Suzy & I decided to visit Saturday morning & spend the afternoon there. This outing was soooooo beautiful not only because the flowers were breathtaking but also because Suite Suzy & I were slowly strolling through gardens spending some real time, which is hard to do any other day in our normal lives. Visiting NYC’s botanical garden seems like it is a real treat no matter what time of year you go because there is so much there.

Shit we were there for about 4 hours and still did not see everything. So guess what, we have to put this on the agenda for a future trip.

  • Central Park – When I walk through Central Park, I can hear Roberta Flack singing "That's The Time" in my head. Just something about that song makes me thing she is talking abot Central PArk in spring. Anyway, we took a little stroll through the park before we left Sunday & it again was beautiful! The only thing I do not like about areas of the park is the horses. I mean they are funky as hell almost so bad that if a gust of winds starts up, you can taste the smell.

Arts & Entertainment:

  • Guggenheim - Our visit to the Guggenheim means that we have officially visited all of the “major” museums in NYC & I guess we saved the one of the best for last. The Guggenheim is featuring “The Shape of Space” exhibit, which is a pure orgy for the visual sense. The exhibit is very progressive & really seems like something that would be at the Museum of Modern Art, nevertheless it was awesome.

Fortunately for the museum but unfortunately it is under massive exterior repair so we cold not get a good look at the legendary exterior façade designed by celebrated architect Frank Lloyd Wright
  • Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix – It’s awesome, nuff said!

  • Platanos & Collard Greens – OK, if you live in NYC r nearby & have not seen this yet, go get some damn tickets now & fuck seeing the Color Purple for now! Platanos & Collard Greens was off the chain it was so refreshing to see something that actually deals with real life scenarios that deals with the relationships of Africans in the Diaspora with a specific focus on Afro-Latinos & Afro-Americans. I will tell you, I am happy that I read the 5 part piece that the Miami Herald did recently on Afro-Latinos because it P&CG dealt with some of the issues presented in the MH.

The one thing that turned me off at this event was some of the crowd. The play started @ 8pm & niggas were still walking in at 830 & someone in my row actually walked in 20 minutes into the 2nd act; OK why did they even bother even coming at all. Why come niggas can’t get no place on time???? Even people in the very 1st row were showing up late as hell. I will not even get into all of these grown assed men wearing hats in-doors!?!?!?!
Hat Etiquette: Indoors, a man should always remove his hat, (particularly in a home, church, courtroom or restaurant) except:

    - in some public buildings or public places such as railroad stations or post offices
    - in the main parlor area of a saloon or general store
    - or while seated at the "lunch counter" of a diner or cafe
    - in entrance halls and corridors of office buildings, or hotels
    - in elevators of public or office buildings, unless a woman is present
    - if carrying packages, parcels or bags and both hands are occupied upon entry
    - if the man is an actor or performer and the hat is being worn as a part of a costume or performance

From the website: “Platanos & Collard Greens is the hit romantic comedic play that tells the story of Freeman, an African-American man, and Angelita, a Latino woman, who are both forced to confront and overcome cultural and racial prejudices, while defending their bond from family and friends.

Platanos will remind you of your family, your love and your life. Platanos is guaranteed to make you laugh, inspire you, and make you think!

Platanos has enchanted audiences of over 40,000 both Off Broadway in New York City and at over 100 colleges and universities in more than 17 states around the country.”

If it was not for Cluiziel, I would have not known about this production, so thanks again. Luckily, we were able to get like the last 2 tickets available for the Saturday night’s performance!

Good Eats:

  • Chevy’s - If you like junk food TexMex, this is the spot. We love it & were bummed out when the closed the restaurant near is at home so we make it a point to go here whenever we are in NYC.

  • Victors Café - This is some real Cuban & has never disappointed. They have the best pork chops on the damn planet! The pork chops are so good, we made 2 visits for dinner during out trip. These pork chops are so good, they will make you wanna bitch slap your great grand mother. Did I mention that they have phenomenal mojotos???

  • Frank's Butcher Shop & Steakhouse - This was good little find for lunch while visiting the Chelsea. The portions were good & the prices were just right! I got a chicken club & Suite Suzy got a burger. Although the service was not the best, we do have this on our list to a spot to hit in the future.

  • Negril Village - OMFG!!! This is one of the best restaurants in NYC. Again thanks to Cluizel, this was a great outing because a) the food was damn good b) the drinks were slamming b) the crowd was hip & chilled & c) the company was great.

I ate like way too much but fuck it you only live once. Here is what I ate Codfish Fritters (app), Collard Green Wontons (app), Jerk Chicken (ent) & 3 caipirinhas; this is just my food. The bill was off the hook but so fucking worth it.

This is mos def on the must visit again list!!!

  • Norma’s - If you love breakfast, this is a must do. This shit ain’t cheap so you can’t go up in hear broke, shit French toast is 17 bucks! I feel bad saying that we go here so much on our visits that the staff fucking remembers us, maybe this is because when I go, I always show a little nipple for a discount. (ask to be seating in Kimberly's area, this sista is on top of her game & is always very nice to Suite Suizy & I!)

On our 5 day trip it may seem like we did a lot but we really did not do much for us. Anyway, I took many pictures but too tired now to sort through them all so stay tuned for some snapshots.

For our anniversary next year we decided to go somewhere else & right now we are considering Montreal, The Bahamas, LA/San Fran, San Antonio & Miami. We have a few months to make a final decision & I already excited! But we did decide to do NYC for one of our little side trips.

Peace,
Bygbaby

A Little Photo Fun

Today while out & about taking photos @ an abandoned building in Detroit's warehouse district with Cousin Dee, I ran across a few things that were burned in some type of fire in addition to some other really tripped out shit. The sights & smells were pretty scary to say the least but the artist in both of us braved the environment & we had some fun taking advantage of some of Detroit's worst blight.

So below I present you with an image that I captured during our outing. I think it’s pretty hot & soon as my application to submit photos to istockphoto is approved, this is one of the first items I will put up for sale.

So for fun, take a look & caption the decapitated clown doll. I would make it a contest but I don’t have shit to give away, OK.

My First Shot

Following up to my “2007 Detroit Festival of the Arts: Finding The Little Things” post, I wanted to share with show the other bracelet that I got from Ruby Ballard-Harris.

I tried to recreate the shot set up from the previous post but cold not get my lighting just right so I had to switch it up a bit but I am still happy with the end result.

This was my 1st image project with my new Nikon D40 SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera.

When I opened the camera the other night, it was very intimidating with all of the settings, button, bell & whistles but I think it will be great fun getting to know my new baby.

Anyway more on my feelings about the camera in a future post.

2007 Detroit Festival of the Arts: Finding The Little Things

Every year without fail, I attend the Detroit Festival of the Arts with my kids as one of our fun father daughter cultural outings.

Not only do the kids get to have fun playing the children’s village, they get to see some of best artisans from around the country perform and showcase their craft.

As part one of my out and about experience at the Detroit Festival of the arts, I want to touch on one of my favorite artists who has been doing this festival for years; Ruby Ballard Harris.

Over the past 3 years Ruby has had me hooked as a customer big time and it is hard for me to visit her without buying anything. The 1st year when we meet, she had these sticking necklaces made from iron branded cured sugar cane, African amber and bone. As soon as I touched one, they all were saying buy me, buy me, buy me now. At this moment Ruby introduced herself to me and invited me to try one on. 3 minutes later she was ringing me up and friendship began.

Whenever I wear Ruby’s necklace, people will stop and ask me about it; where did you get that from, what does it symbolize and can I buy it from you. I never get tired of these questions because I feel proud to wear something that's not blinging, African inspired and made by someone I know.

This necklace symbolizes to me the African Diaspora, meaning:

  • Bone - The strength of my ancestors
  • Sugar Cane - What the salves in the Caribbean & Brazil slaved and died over
  • Amber - The richness of the all Africans in & outside of the continent

One of Ruby’s major talents is Fiber art and let me tell you, she makes some of the baddest African inspired attire I have ever seen. After some quick Googling, I found out that Ruby is also an instructor of textile design at the Indianapolis Art Center, how cool is that! Her pieces are timeless, skillfully made and something that you cannot find just anywhere, so when you see her, you must buy then!

So this year when I walked up to her exhibit area, we greeted each other like old friends with a big embrace and some family catch up talk & she marveled at how grown my babies are. After we caught up, she called me out because I did not have on her necklace and we both laughed. Ruby then pointed out to me that she made some bracelets over the winter and she had some right for me.

So I start lookin’ and I started likin’ immediately. I picked 2 of what she had out then tried them on and surrendered my charge card. Then I look back over and saw another bracelet that had Tafari all over it. This one was sterling silver, African amber and some semi precious stones and she “made me” try it on. Next thing I know, it was being charged.

I purchased other items from a few of my favorites and left the festival over budget but happy. My new bracelets from Ruby were my favorite find of all and below is a snap shot of the 1st 2 bracelets on top of one of my giant Hosta leaves (I think it makes a striking background if I say so myself). Anyway, the bracelets are made of ceramic, bone, wood and sterling silver. I have had them on since I got them and I’m not sure when I will take them off.

Hopefully you can catch Ruby at a summer art festival near you and if you see her, tell her Bygbaby from Detroit said wazz up!

Term of Last Week: Négritude:

So I try to post my term of the week every Wednesday but dropped the ball last week cuz I was busy as hell & fighting this cold. Shit I have been down for the last few days & my glands are still swollen but I have more energy at least. After I am done here, I will be popping some pills & talking a nap!

Moving along & getting back on topic, while I was putting together my last “Term of the week” Coon(ing), I was going to use the word Negrotude to describe one of the people that I mentioned but before I did, I decided to Google it & winded up misspelling it so I clicked Négritude because Google as if this was the word that I meant.

So after clicking it to get a new set of search results, I figured that I had a whole new thing & a learning opportunity for myself so I want to share this in case there are others out there who were not up on the Négritude movement from the 1930’s.
-----------------------------------------------------------
History of Négritude:

Négritude is a literary and political movement developed in the 1930s by a group that included the future Senegalese President Léopold Sédar Senghor, Martinican poet Aimé Césaire, and the Guianan Léon Damas. The Négritude writers found solidarity in a common black identity as a rejection of French colonial racism. They believed that the shared black heritage of members of the African diaspora was the best tool in fighting against French political and intellectual hegemony and domination.

The movement was influenced by the Harlem Renaissance, and particularly the works of African-American writers Langston Hughes and Richard Wright, whose works address the themes of "blackness" and racism. Further inspiration came from Haiti, where there had similarly been a flourishing of black culture in the early 20th Century, and which historically holds particular pride of place in the African diaspora world due to the slave revolution led by Toussaint L'Ouverture in the 1790's. Césaire speaks, thus, of Haiti as being "where négritude stood up for the first time." On the European side, there was also influence and support from from the Surrealism movement.

Bygbaby.com Mindspill

During the 1920s and 1930s, a small group of black students and scholars from France's colonies and territories assembled in Paris where they were introduced to the writers of the Harlem Renaissance by Paulette Nardal and her sister Jane. Paulette Nardal and the Haitian Dr. Leo Sajou founded La revue du Monde Noir (1931-32), a literary journal published in English and French, which attempted to be a mouthpiece for the growing movement of African and Caribbean intellectuals in Paris. This Harlem connection was also shared by the closely parallel development of negrismo in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean, and it is likely that there were many influences between the movements, which differed in language but were in many ways united in purpose. At the same time, "Murderous Humanitarianism" (1932) was signed by prominent Surrealists including the Martiniquan surrealists Pierre Yoyotte and J.M. Monnerot and the relationship developed especially with Aimé Césaire. (read more here)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Etymology:

The word Négritude was coined by Aimé Césaire, from the French word nègre, which was equivalent to "black" or "Negro" in France but "nigger" in Martinique. Césaire deliberately and proudly incorporated this derogatory word into the name of his ideological movement.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Négritude Founders:

Léopold Sédar Senghor - Senegalese poet and statesman, founder of the Senegalese Democratic Bloc. Senghor was elected president of Senegal in the 1960s. He retired from office in 1980. Senghor was one of the originators of the concept of Négritude, defined as the literary and artistic expression of the black African experience. In historical context the term has been seen as an ideological reaction against French colonialism and a defense of African culture. It has deeply influenced the strengthening of African identity in the French-speaking black world.

Aimé Césaire - Martinican poet, playwright, and politician, one of the most influential authors from the French-speaking Caribbean. Césaire's thoughts about restoring the cultural identity of black Africans were first fully expressed in Cahier d'un retour au pays natal (Return to My Native Land), a mixture of poetry and poetic prose. The work celebrated the ancestral homelands of Africa and the Caribbean. It was completed in 1939 but not published in full form until 1947.

my negritude is not a stone
nor a deafness flung against the clamor of the day
my negritude is not a white speck of dead water
on the dead eye of the earth
my negritude is neither tower nor cathedral

it plunges into the red flesh of the soil
it plunges into the blaxing flesh of the sky
my negritude riddles with holes
the dense affliction of its worthy patience.

Léon Damas - Leon-Gontran Damas was born in Cayenne, French Guyana in 1912 to a middle-class family. His father was mulatto of partly European origin and there was Amerindian and African ancestry on his mother's side of the family. Young Damas received his primary education in Cayenne, but he later moved to Martinique and attended Lycée Schoelcher there. At this lycée (French secondary school financed by the government) he shared philosophy classes with young Aime Cesaire and the two started what would become a lifelong friendship.

Damas's work is significantly influenced by the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance, the ideas of French surrealism, and the rhythms and tunes of African American blues and jazz. Damas himself has also commented that in his poems one can "find rhythm", that his poems "can be danced and they can be sung".
-----------------------------------------------------------
Négritude Time Line:

  • 1517 - France begins enslaving black Africans
  • 1636 - Martinique colonized by Louis XIII - the first black slaves arrive
  • 1665 - Le Code noir, by Jean-Baptiste Colbert (French chief financial minister) - Rulebook for the treatment of slaves
  • 1789 - French Revolution - Major themes include the rights of man, the issue of slavery.
  • 1804 - Haiti is the first French colony to gain independence
  • 1823 - Ourika, by Mme de Duras (wife of Louis XVIII's chamberlain) - The first French-language novel to address the effects of racism on black people.
  • 1848 - Victor Schoelscher (French under-secretary) abolishes slavery in the colonies
  • 1919 - Harlem Renaissance (US) - Césaire and Damas were greatly inspired by this valuation of the culture, literature, art, and music of the black world, notably:
    • W.E.B. Du Bois, The Souls of Black Folk
    • Langston Hughes, The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes
    • Alain Leroy Locke, The New Negro
    • Claude McKay, Banjo, Home to Harlem
  • 1921 - Negrismo (Cuba) - Celebration of black-Cuban music, rhythm, folklore, literature, poetry, and art
  • 1927 - Journal: La Revue Indigène, by Jacques Roumain - Attempt to rediscover a black African authenticity in the Antilles
  • 1930 - Book of poetry: Pigments, by Damas - Sometimes referred to as the manifesto of Négritude. General theme of demystification: we need to cure the ills of Western society. Some highlights:
    • Ils sont venus ce soir The night white man arrived and kidnapped Africans for slavery, many people were killed - we don't even know how many.
    • Un Clochard m'a demandé 10 sous Damas once had to beg for money, but pride helped him to grow strong enough to earn it instead.
    • Solde Whites are pretentious and ridiculous, never mind cruel, yet Blacks have to be their accomplices.
    • S.O.S. Why and how on earth did Whites decide to steal Blacks and to commit such Hitleresque acts?
    • Blanchi Whites try to bleach us, but we want only to be black.
  • 1931 - The trois pères meet in Paris and begin discussing and dreaming about Négritude.
  • Journal: La Revue du monde noir (The Journal of the Black World), by Paulette Nardal and Dr. Sajoux. In addition to disseminating ideas via the journal, this collaboration led to a kind of club where black writers could meet to discuss related issues.
  • 1932 - Journal: Légitime défense - A single issue of a Marxist, revolutionary, surrealist journal published by a group of Martinican students and immediately suppressed.
  • 1934 - Journal: L'Étudiant noir (The Black Student), by the three fathers - Break down nationalistic barriers among black people; recognize, approach, and unify black people in Africa, France, and the Antilles. This was the first and most important political and cultural journal of la Négritude.
  • 1935 - Birth of la Négritude - Seek out richness and originality, rehabilitate that which had been marginalized. Already independent, Haiti isn't interested in participating.
  • 1938 - Journal: Les Griots, by François Duvalier - Contributions of black African civilization
  • 1939 - Poem: Cahier d'un retour au pays natal (Notebook of a Return to My Native Land), by Césaire - The word Négritude appears for the first time in this poem about being black and living in the Antilles.

(Continuation of Timeline)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Back to Me:

To end, this post is a good damn reason why I love Google. I typed something wrong & got a corrective suggestion that became the term of the week.

Have you heard or studied the Négritude movement & do you think that movements like Négritude & the Harlem Renaissance will ever appear again bringing us into a renewed self-consciousness?
