Untitled [Maybe]

The post title is inspired by Common's song “Black Maybe” from his "Finding Forever" album (2007).
"Can't come around
They gon' wanna bring you down
No one knows just what's inside
Doing dope and doing time
Why they messing with your mind
Black maybe..."

I took this photo Saturday & was going to delete it but when I looked at it this evening, it truly reflected my mood.

Why:
a) Hillary staged a comeback; maybe!
b) Someone was totally offended by comments that I made in my recent “Verbal Holocaust” post. More details to come; maybe!
c) I have to shovel snow tomorrow; maybe!
-----------------------------------------------------------
Maybe no More:

a) Hillary staged a comeback; maybe!
Explained: Yes Hilary staged a comeback with her 3 victories yesterday but is still losing the delegate count. I fear that if her & Obama continue with the smear campaign (more Hilary than Barack) whoever wins may get their ass beat by rooster neck & chin John. But I think if Barack continues to rack up the delegates he will knock John out.

The next few weeks are going to be pretty intense so I hope that Barack steps his game up but continues to take the high road while Hilary resorts to her dirty little tricks.

b) Someone was totally offended by comments that I made in my recent “Verbal Holocaust” post. More details to come; maybe!
Explained: In my blog post titled “Verbal Holocaust”, a local reader who was interviewing me for an article about me was offended after reading:

"I hate to compare the Jewish Holocaust to the African/Black Holocaust because I think it is impossible to compare atrocities but I do not understand why Jews particularly in America get treated with kit gloves & anything said against them amounts to a verbal/social/political beheading. When negative comments and or actions are made against Negroes they carry much less weight than anti-Semitic behaviors. Is money/power/racial ambiguity a factor why one group is untouchable while another is the bastard/nappy headed stepchild of the nation?"

During our conversation, I was asked if I thoughts/comments were anti-Semitic to which I said no. I was/am pointing out differences in treatment between two minority groups. The conversation really turned a little sour & to be honest I lost a little sleep over it.

Today while driving to work, I thought to myself, if you are pro-Black & concerned for your welfare & that of your people, why is that you can be viewed as a separatist or a racist. I have never considered myself to be a racist or a separatist by any means.

I contacted the interviewer today after discussing the situation with friends & my boo & decided not to proceed with the piece that was being done on me. I think after the most recent exchange the piece was going a route that I did not feel like traveling.

"Hi ...,

After our conversation yesterday, I looked inward a reconsidered my post titled "Verbal Holocaust". I was troubled by your assumptions to the point that I was not able to sleep. I have never attacked or spewed ill will toward any group ever. Until you mentioned it, I had never heard of the "Jewish Conspiracy" & did some research today on the subject.

I thank you for giving me the opportunity to learn something new in terms of how Jewish citizens face discrimination in this way.

I would like to thank you for sharing your time to find out more about me. However at this time I wish not to continue to work on this piece. After our conversation, I thought back a little & really need to note that my life is more than being a blogger who speaks freely & a Black man navigating through life in America.

Regards,
Tafari"

c) I have to shovel snow tomorrow; maybe!
Explained: I did have to shovel before I left this morning & was not happy at all!!! The one thing that I do like about the snow though is how it makes everything looks so pretty.

  • Tafari, I think this is a really great post. Way to go on the justification and the introspection.

There is absolutely NOTHING anti-Semitic about what you said. Overall, and this is just MY opinion, I don't see anything wrong with what you said. I knew exactly what you were talking about, and I've often wondered the same thing.

    Anti-Semitic? Sheesh, gimme a break.

You brought up an important distinction--think about it the way white supremacists would--they're pro-white, and they're concerned for their individual welfare and that of their people--but *we* consider a good number of them to be separatists and racists.

    Why?

Primarily because a lot of them, more often than not, tend to fling around hate-speech, "ill-will" and make derogatory comments about other people/groups of people with regards to the "preservation of their kind" (borrowed words folks--plenty of examples of the same rhetoric out there...).

The difference here is, as you mentioned, you didn't say or indicate anything derogatory or hateful. You were just pointing out your own observations with regards to the way things seem to happen as experienced by two groups of people. And again, I'm SURE many of us have witnessed this same thing and have asked ourselves the same questions.

I totally admire the ADL and the work they do to nip this stuff in the bud. What they do for the Jewish community is amazing. We have yet to pull ourselves together to present an organization of the same caliber. Hmmm...maybe if the NAACP would pull its head out of its ass, be a little less celebrity-obsessed, stop handing out "Image Awards" to the likes of R. Kelly, and get it's priorities straight, we could have an organization that has our backs the same way.

Lastly though--something to keep in mind--think about how *sensitive* other people/groups of people say we are about these types of comments.

    Can't win for losing, huh?

Why can't we all just be human--the planet is too damned small, and life is way too short for all of this craziness... Sigh!

  • A Jewish person once called me anti-semetic when I took them to task on Israel/Palestine issues as well as other things we were discussing.

I told him, "If I'm an anti-Semite, you are an anti-Hamite!!!" That shut him up...but only briefly. :)

  • And here I was thinking you were being pretty clear when you first wrote it.

  • sorry about the snow.
i am still not clear about who is really a "semite" and how that relates to the 1.7% of euro-americans that self-identify as "jewish". ok, maybe i am really clear about it which is why claims of "anti-semitism" by non-semites make me chuckle.

  • hi tifari ,
you have got to be kidding me !!! Don't get me started on the jews .. yes i said it... Their antisemitic rants are boring , did you see how they tried to lynch Mel Gibson ??? Now I don't know much about Mel Gibson , except that he can tell a hell of a story and direct great movies . I once got into a discussion about this , between a jew and a muslim . The jewish guy i really liked him i could not fault him , for being brainwashed , plus he was like 80 trekking with me in china , so i gave it a rest ...

But most jewish people are brainwashed , they do not know their history , otherwise they wouldn't call themselves jews.

  • i spelled your name wrong sorry !!!! tafari!

  • The peeps for holding your boy down & sharing your own experiences!!!

This really threw my week for a loop but I am cool now. I heard back from the journalist who apologized & an admission to overreacting was made in addition to an apology, which carried weight.

Tamra - it is amazing how "minority" are on the defensive & that is not totally bad. it is a shame that it has to be that way!

Carla - "I told him, "If I'm an anti-Semite, you are an anti-Hamite!!!"" damn!

Muslimahlocs - Honestly, I have not tangible knowledge of Jewish/Semite history other that what jumped off in Germany. How do & why do they tie them selves to Semites if they are not & where does the 1.7% come from. Teach me...

Byrd Park - I do recall vividly the issues with Mel Gibson & so how short lived it was compared to others. Why is that??? Tifari out LOL!!!
