My Avid Learner
So to help with their learning process, I make sure they attend exhibits, read books, & do independent research reports on random Africans across the Diaspora. Once my girls finish their researching, they present their information to the family and then we do a Q&A session, as we all have something to learn.
The last report given was tonight by Olivia on Angela Davis & she did an awesome job! I assigned her to do Angela Davis because last week, she was in a feminist rage telling me that I needed to take out the trash because she, her mom, & aunt Sade were strong women. After she finished letting me have it, I asked her if she was Angela Davis all of the sudden. She then asked me who Angela Davis was & from there a 2 page written paper assigned.
I also told her that she had to were here her like Angela did in the 70’s which she was excited about. She did such an awesome job with her vocabulary, that I could not help but to smile during her 10 minute talk.
I think in a couple of years, we will be doing a works cited page in the MLA format. Gotta prepare for the future, right???

Up next is Sade, this coming Friday & she is reporting on the Black Panther Party, because she asked Olivia questions about them & Olivia did not know, so another lesson is on the way. I am excited to here what she pulls together for us.

Byg & SS she is beautiful! I fully agree with you on teaching the girls about their history on a daily basis. I commend you for that. It's a shame that now when you ask a kid (or adult) for that matter what do they know of MLKJ the first thing that they say is "I have a dream"! They can't go any further. This is sad.
Teach them and they will come!

Wow - this is hot. I love this idea. Many parents don't do this kind of stuff anymore - they really don't. You should post about what other types of things you do to parent your kids.

Awesome way to teach and inspire, awesome subjects, and awesome parental/familial involvement!
She's such a cutie!
Way to go. Seriously. If only others would "get it."

Ya know, my parents used to sit me down in the house for hours on end...making me do math problems and learn vocabulary while my cousins and friends were out running around the Bronx...
You and your lady are excellent parents and a shining example of what real parenting is...
Also, I get to breathe a sigh of relief! I thought my wife and I were going to be the only militant pseudo hippie middle class black folks in the whole wide world.

My mom, spent no quality education time with me that I can speak of, and I am not mad at her for that, it is what it is. Because of my childhood environment, I am committed to seeing that they have what they need & more. It helps to have a boo that's on the same page!
I am a little mo re militant that Suite Suzy buy hey! LOL

Your approach to learning is sooo cool! I hope that your daughters appreciate it (if not now, then later in life, lol).

LOL, you know, I will start a new project at the drop of a dime!!!
I was interviewed for a local paper this week & we talked about race & identity & she asked me if I ever consider teaching & I laughed. I get that a lot & from many of my teacher friends. I guess when I finally get this damn degree done, anything will be possible.

What an awesome daddy you are! See, these are the stories the stupid media needs to hear next time they wanna run a story about black deadbeat fathers.
And you would be a great teacher...you have that "keep it real but handle your business" thing that so many of our kids desperately need.
