The Cost of Lunch

Last night, I packed myself a lunch of leftovers to bring to work today like normal. This morning the girls prepared my lunch bag for me which typically has my morning snack (Special K bar, banana, & cherry pomegranate juice), leftovers & my afternoon snack (apple & or grapes). Well rushing out the door, I saw the bag & picked it up (or so I thought) then hit the door to drop Olivia off @ school.

When I finally arrived at work around 9ish, I realized that I did not really pick up my lunch bag & shouted SHIT!!! (inside my head).

So I darted to Mickey D’s for a large OJ & fuck, I gave in to a sausage egg & cheese biscuit (I did not eat the top half biscuit in an attempt to lessen the caloric & fat intake).

With breakfast out of the way, all I had to do was get lunch; I set in my mind to go to Macy’s Marketplace to pick up a little something.

Bygbaby.com MindspillSo now it's 1pm, I’m up in the Marketplace & grab a chicken salad sandwich on whole wheat, a country fresh salad, bottle of water & damn, I gave in to the food urges & got an oatmeal raisin cookie. $9.79 later, I was making my way back through Macy’s but to get out, I had to go through the mens dept.

My eyes kept on focusing on sale signs, new spring wear etc, but I kept strong & kept moving. Well at least until I got to the shoe dept. where I spotted a pair of brown Clark casuals. Next thing you know, I asked for a size 12, moments later I was signing a credit slip & the shoes were in my possession.

As you can see, today, I totally fucked up everything that I said I was not going to do far as food & money. I will redeem myself tonight @ the gym and ask the elliptical machine for forgiveness.

OK, so now I am back at the office eating my lunch, (whole sandwich, half of the salad & half of the cookie) while reading a few blogs. My last blog stop was the “Concrete Loop”, where I read a story about Haitians eating “mud cookies” to survive.

Initially, I thought that this was a spoof but soon realized this was some real shit & did some Googling to find more news about it. Suddenly, I felt socially bad about my lunch time escapade @ Macy’s & wished I had taken Suite Suzy up on her offer to bring my lunch bag to me (She is home sick but functional & also taking care of Sade who barfed a few times this am).

Poor Haitians Resort to Eating Dirt
By: Jonathan M. Katz (AP)

ABC News Mud Cookie Photo

It was lunchtime in one of Haiti's worst slums, and Charlene Dumas was eating mud. With food prices rising, Haiti's poorest can't afford even a daily plate of rice, and some take desperate measures to fill their bellies. Charlene, 16 with a 1-month-old son, has come to rely on a traditional Haitian remedy for hunger pangs: cookies made of dried yellow dirt from the country's central plateau.

The mud has long been prized by pregnant women and children here as an antacid and source of calcium. But in places like Cite Soleil, the oceanside slum where Charlene shares a two-room house with her baby, five siblings and two unemployed parents, cookies made of dirt, salt and vegetable shortening have become a regular meal. • A cheat day is actually recommended every once in a while. Keeps you from losing your mind in the midst of your "lifestyle alterations." You've been doing so well with diet and exercise so, hey--no biggie. Back on track the next day, right?

I have mixed emotions about the Haiti situation, but I will say that yeah, it's definitely sad, and it helps keep things in perspective for those of us that need to be reminded every now and then.

  • Well, I guess my cheat day, will have to last a while LOL!!! And I think I was on the verge of losing it. I mean, I was smelling bacon on he way to work the other day & there was no reason for it because I was on the freeway. Food day dreams are a bitch!

So since you opened the door ever so slightly, what are your mixed feelings telling you about Haiti?

  • the consequence of white colonialism

it's a shame too because haiti has done so much for this country

during the 1800's when the hatians defeated the french and won their independence, haiti drained france of so much money that they had to sell the louisianna territory in the united states

this added about five to ten states to the nation

if it wasn't foe haiti who knows what would have happened in the united states

and look at how our government repays them

  • Hey, Byg, you talking 'bout that Naked Cherry Pom...cuz that's the business.
First, of all the whole idea of a video cut-and-pasted from stills gets me every time... I *thought* I lost it on the one of Kwame in the white pork-pie, but I realized I hadn't yet lost it when I got to the one of him donating blood. lol
Anyway, since it's all your fault I'm subscribed to this foolishness, I thought I'd up your YouTube with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFOhy6nXPo0

Your girl has stepped up her style game. A-s-kkk about me...

  • James - When it all boils down to it, American ain't gone give a fuck & they don't obviously. Right here, they want to deny the existence & effects of slavery.

The US will only help if they get something out of the deal & unfortunately, Haiti has not much to offer. That is probably the reason Haitians get shipped back when crossing the boarder in Miami, unlike most Cubans.

Renea - OK, that just fucked me up for the night LOL!!! Sounds like she was talkin' bout Kawame Kilpatrick's wife, hoe & mistress!!!

I don't know the name of it but that shit is the BOMB!!!

  • See, just when I start off thinking, "Damn, he's eating sooo healthy!" -- but don't be so hard on yourself. Just hit that elliptical tonight. I have to do the Violet Zaki tapes tonight because I ate cornbread. So good. So fattening.

And how sad is it that our fat asses are trying to lose weight because we have too much food and these poor people are eating mud because they're starving.

  • Alright, are you asking for a long post??? LOL.
    ---------------------------------------------------------
One of my ggg-grandmothers is Haitian. I’ve always been fascinated by Haiti’s history, and by all that I’ve ever read about Toussaint L’Overture. He was a hero of sorts for me as a kid.

I’ve read a lot about Haiti’s history, I’ve followed developments there for a while, and at some point when we visit, I plan to do a photo documentary.
    ---------------------------------------------------------
BUT, when I think about Haiti in its current state, my head starts to hurt—actually I feel more like I want to cry. It is so complicated (heck, but what place on the planet is not?). Haiti has such a rich, inspiring and interesting history, and to look at where the country is now vs. what they’ve achieved in the past (albeit a few hundred years ago) is heartbreaking. When I think of Haiti I think of potential unrealized/unclaimed.

Haiti is not unlike some of the poorer African countries– a history of corrupt and/or incompetent governments, rogue gangs and militias, squabbling over skin color and ethnicity, human rights atrocities, extremely slow social and economic development, extreme poverty in many places, meddling of outsiders in internal affairs and then abandonment by these same outside forces, and now the AIDS epidemic and major environmental issues...sigh!

Like so many places around the world that were screwed up by colonialism, Haiti continues to suffer the consequences. Some countries have recovered better than others—Haiti is one of those that has not done so well over time. Haiti was on the right track at one point (first independent black republic in the “New World,” and the richest of the Caribbean islands) but seems to have gone downhill since.

So, I have mixed emotions about Haiti because I am totally in love with the place and its history, but seeing that mud cakes story makes me wish progress would happen a whole lot sooner. Preval shows a little bit of potential, but Haiti needs a lot of work….we’ll see how that goes over time.
    ---------------------------------------------------------
This is a site I love that gives a decent summary of Haiti’s history
    History

Here's a link that talks about a lot of the problems and some "proposed" solutions...

Here’s link from the South Florida Sun Sentinel for Haiti News

*Lastly, there’s a movie coming out sometime in 2009 about Toussaint, directed by Danny Glover, and starring Don Cheadle as Toussaint. Can you see it??? Mos Def, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Angela Bassett are going to be in it too. I can’t wait.

By Anonymous Tamra, at Friday, February 1, 2008 10:46:00 PM EST

  • @tamra: that movie sounds great, thanks for the tip.

Bigbaby: I read that mud cookie story the other day....how tragic when we are wasting all that money in Iraq.

On another note, the meal you bought at Macy's would have cost you $20 in Cali. Oh, and your mayor is magically pimpilicious....but don't worry, ours is too (Gavin Newsome, huge affair scandal last year) he just doesn't wear the clothes for it--lol :-)

  • hey tafari
i have beeen to haiti , a couple of times , once i was there during the coup . I LOVE THAT PLACE , I LOVE AYITI .. VIVRE AYITI !!!!!! There is nothing like it , a very powerful place . You must look at it , in the way that the people are resourceful, it is a very complicated place . The rich are beyond wealthy , and the poor are so poor . Initially i never wanted to go , because of the voodoo , but I cannot explain it , once your there and you see the statue of toussaint l'overture I could not help myself but fall in love . I traveled all over to the slums such as carfoure , and out to the country side along the sea , up the mountains to jacmel . The haitians , are truly artistic , the tap tap buses painted in beautiful vibrant colors , the metal work , the paper mache. To me all this outweighed the bad , because the people still survive , and for them we must be positive !!!!!!!! I know many hatians , and they always want to go home , no matter what the situation . vivre ayiti!!!!!!

  • Liz - Damn, you pulling out tapes! That cornbread must have been damn good!!! LOL

Tamara - Damn, you laid it down! You know my past thoughts on Haiti were bad. It was a place to believe was scary to say the least in terms of Voodoo practices, seemingly lawlessness and anything else that I absorbed from the media but now I know better.

Haiti's past is glorious & Toussaint L’Overture & others get all the glory for that. Sad thing is there is no Toussaint L’Overture there now leading & trying to get the people out of the mire that exists there now.

What if Haiti could make a comeback that would be a great thing & a real testament to our survival as a people. After the last leader was ousted I heard nothing about them getting a leader that would take them to the next level.

On a topographical level, Haiti looks pretty baron. I once flew over after leaving the Dominican & was like damn, it looks deserted compared to the Dominican which obviously has so much more going on.

Damn shame, one island 2 countries, 2 totally different worlds.

Thx for putting me & everyone else up on that movie. With Don Cheadle, it is sure to he a hit. He fully embodies every role that he takes on!

I appreciate you rising to my call out & getting comprehensive in your response. I am thinking that you should start a topical blog, you have many great things running in your mind. Tamra's Mindspill!!!

Invisible Woman - 20 bucks damn! Trust me when I saw it would have been a more frugal if that was the case. LOL

I did read up on your mayor & that news reporter & was like damn. I even saw a few comparisons between him & Kwame recently. Talk about dicks leading the city!!!

    Naturally Sophia - Tru dat!!!

Torrance - Clinton was no help neither was his predecessor but what about all them bastards before???

Byrd Parker - Wow, how awesome! Looks like we had the same reservation.

So what took you to Ayiti? Where you missioning, family, vacation, kidnapped what???

    Talk to me,
    Tafari

  • It's funny, I've thought about my own "stuff" blog--I already have a title for it--"The Monkey Mind of TiGe." Hmmm, wonder why??? Only thing is, I have so much other stuff going on, I can't imagine having time to manage two blogs.

Thanks for the encouragement though. We'll see what happens. ...Hmmm, now you really got the gears turning on that one. Dammit!

Both (papa) Bush and Clinton policies on Haiti sucked. I don't even know how to categorize Clinton's. It just sucked.

There is a video or photo essay, I forget which, on the Sun-Sentinel site that explains some of the topographical issues in a bit more detail.

Lastly, I was too embarrassed to say, but my cheat day weakness is...White Castle! I know. Ewwwww!

I beat your deadline though. I just went ahead and threw something up. Have some things to get off my mind so I figured I might as well set it up now. Here's the link. It's a work in progress and will evolve over time, so cut me some slack. ;-)
