Navigating The Negro Consciousness:Religiously Speaking

Warning: if you are a Jesus freak & get offended easily, do not read any further.

Last year I saw Na’im Akbar speak at a Diversity Conference @ work (U of M Hospital) & the focus of his keynote address was navigating the dual consciousness. While the talks scope was very broad, it was obviously geared toward the dual consciousness of Negro folk.

Na’im talked about what it means to be both African and American and how to deal with both in a sane way.

Walking away from that talk I started to thinking about things in my life that were affected by my African heritage & my American citizenship. I don’t feel like going into a lot of detail because if I did this would be a long fucked up read. So suffice it to say that segments of the speech were factored into my decision to change my name.

Kinda switching topics on you a bit: Today I was in rural town of Manchester MI because a friend of mine invited me to go flying in her glider plan. Well as I was making my way out to the farm/landing strip, I got a little lost and in doing so I found this huge cross in a field.

Immediately upon seeing the cross I started having the visions of crosses being burned on Negro lawns, I thought of Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees & I thought of Negro marchers being attacked with water hoses & by dogs while demanding basic freedoms. Yes, it was a deep moment while lost in the middle of no mans land.

So after I see this huge cross I see a church then I started to understand that this cross was on the churches property (later confirmed). At this point, I saw the cross as some sort of homage to Christianity. In this moment, I thought back to Na’im Akbar & his speech of navigation. This time I focused on navigating Black thought & Christianity.

- What does it mean to be both Black & Christian???
- Is being a Black Christian some type of oxymoron???

Are Black Christians caught up in some type of religious brainwashing of subconsciously trapped in a Matrix waiting to be freed by "Neo" he whom is also lost.

Well I guess I spared myself from having to answer these questions a few months ago when I decided that being a Christian was not a path that was good for me. So I just consider myself to be someone who believes in a higher power out there somewhere but not convinced at all that Jesus is the answer.

When I have discussed this with friends, I always factor in slavery & ask them to reconcile for me why being a Black Christian is the end all to be all to “salvation”. That’s where things get really interesting because I have yet to hear a viable reason why.

Black people where oppressed under the name of Christianity and we know this but yet many of us pray to a pretty white Jesus.

Enough of the controversy, here is a picture of the cross (I was happy that I had my camera on deck). Consider it and in three words or less, caption it.

The catch is that I want you to give a response as Negro or other (if you are) then give a response from a religious perspective. I will go first:

- Negro Response: Just add fire
- Religious Response: Jesus lives here

Labels: , ,

17 Comments:

  • Negro response: cowards in hoods
    Religious response: savior

Regarding the “Negro Response: Just add fire”, one thing that has always confused me about the KKK spreading hatred in the name of Christianity, is the fact that Jesus Christ was Jewish...uh, don't they hate Jews too?

Anyway, when I was younger I wasn’t so sure Christianity was right for me. I couldn’t be an atheist because I just felt too strongly about the existence of a higher power. I too could not understand the love affair with the “pretty white Jesus”. (Which by the way is an image European artists conjured up; judging by the region of the world he was born in he probably actually looked more Middle Eastern)

After researching other religions (including Islam and Judaism) I came right back to Cristianity. Despite the fact that Christianity has been used to spread hate; my belief in God is the only thing that brings me peace. Is he (Jesus) the only way to salvation? Well if you believe in what the Holy Bible says then yes. If you don’t then no and that’s what it all comes down to; your individual beliefs, your faith or lack of it. No one can be sure what way is the right way and we have all been given free will to decide which way we want to go or if we don’t want to believe at all.

People talk about Christian fanatics or Islamic fantics; there's no difference between a small sect of a religion that kills in the name of Allah or the Klan; or some sicko who blows up an abortion clinic claiming to do God's work.

So as long as I understand that no matter what religion a person is, all men are born with the ability to make choices and it is up to the individual if they want to be a complete ASS. I don’t believe that religion is the problem; I believe the problem is people under the influence of EVIL.

So, if someone wants to criticize me for believing in "the white man's religion" then so be it. I just don't look it that way and they are entitled to their opinion.

  • MY whitey response: misplaced. misused. mistrust.

My pagan response: misguided unnecessary death

Before they could use the tree for whatever misguided plans they had, they had to first murder the tree. A tree that was meant to live amongst us. To give us breath. To feed our bodies. To touch our souls with tranquility.

To take the life of any being is to assume a responsibility you have no right to.

  • Yes, we are off to a good start here!!!

Shay - You really took it there! Thanks for sharing aspect f your journey & I see that we have traveled a very similar path.

Lester - That simply stated & clever as hell!

Trish - Wow, that was deep. The pagan response sent me on a mental journey wondering was the death unnecessary?.?.?

  • Negro Response: Not my home
    Religious Response: symbol of salvation

I agree with Shay. I have been through believing in God and Jesus because that’s what my Grandma said, to being not sure because "Because I said so" was not a good enough answer to my questions about religion and then to where I am now. I don't feel that my life would be the same if not for my belief in God. And I know people wonder why it is Christians believe so fervently that there is a Jesus when there if no "proof" besides the Bible and some even question that. My answer is Faith. My prayers are answered because of Faith. My life is better because of Faith and that’s not something I am willing to let go. I know that Christianity is not from Africa and if I was just African and not American I probably would have different beliefs but that’s not the case so I must live the life that God has given me. My purpose is to follow the commandments set before me and in all things be a reflection of Jesus who gave his life for my sins. Besides, I would rather live my life as if there was a God and find out there wasn't than to live like there wasn't and find that there is.

  • I've been around "Christians" all my life and it's not pretty. (from what I've seen)Do I consider myself to be a Christian?....not yet, going through the process. Do I believe in a higher power?....Yes. In my opinion, Christianity is a process. You don't wake up one morning and decide that you are suddenly a christian, it just doesn't work that way. It's a gradual process. I think the church has become more business oriented than spiritual. I have to deal with Jesus juice drinkin "Christians" here at the office, and they are more corrupted than the mob!
All this to say....I may not be a christian yet but I know that if I need to have a personal one on one with Jesus I can do so at any place and time other than the church. This is just my opinion.

  • I have been trying to make my way through the muddy waters of religion and spirituality for some time. To be perfectly honest I am just lazy and that's why I am still "looking for an answer".

However a couple things jump out at me when I read your post.

    1) If I were a Christian I would probably say you were confusing the messenger with the message. Arguably, it is the "white man's religion" but that doesn't make the message or works of Christ invalid. Christianity has been at fore of many of the movements in Black America as well, the Abolitionism & Civil Rights are the first two that pop into my head.

    2) Why is Christianity the only road to salvation? This comes off as a chicken and egg type of thing. I don't think there is a logical answer to that question without first believing some of the faith's fundamental principles. I also take it to be a personal choice and if you don't think its right for you then ... it isn't.
No one really knows what happens when you die and although everyone can promote their idea as the truth they can't prove it. So I say let your spirit move you.

  • I like this post!

    Negro Response: Begone Before Dark

    Religous Response: Peace Unto You

Part of me wants to say that it seems like your problem with Christianity isnt just with Jesus or that particular faith, but with organized religon in general. Am I right??

Cause a whole lotta thangs been done to other folks in the name of religion! I think its just up to the individual to decide if they can deal with all of the baggage that comes with any specific religon.

  • nice post .

sometimes , people need something to believe in , something to get them through the day or though their lives.

In regards to slavery , some enlightened ones used the spirituals , as a call to freedom , but most slaves were happy being slaves . Poor harriet had to really get rough to make some slaves leave .

    what a mess.

  • Religious Negro response: Not for the faint of heart.

Whenever I think about the whole misuse of religion issue, I always think about religion's complement, science. Science is a tool for understanding our external world. Likewise, religion is a tool for understanding our internal world. Any tool can be misused. But you would never hear anybody saying that we should get rid of science because of nuclear warfare, or that they could never bring themselves to study biology because of eugenics.

  • My aunt recently told me that I was pissed off at Christians not Christianity. She was somewhat right but I'm happy where I am.

Byrd - I agree with you, some people need something to hold onto & I respect that.

Malik - Clever combo caption! I never considered science as a counter to religion but I see where you are coming from. Thanks for that perspective.

You know, when I was pulling this post together, I was thinking that I would get some raw responses (-) but I was wrong. I am happy that I can be me & have frank discussion with friends from different walks of life.

  • Bygbaby ~ Which death are you referring to? The death of the tree? Yes, completely unnecessary. The death of Christ ('cause yes, even pagans believe there was a great man who walked the face of the earth. A philosopher. A prophet. But still a man) was completely unnecessary. What was his crime?

By Blogger Trish, at Wednesday, August 1, 2007 10:35:00 AM EDT

  • Trish - Mos Def the death of the tree(s) & Jesus. What of he had a longer life???

    What exactly is a Pagan?

  • First of all who said and confirmed that Jesus was white especially since he lived in Africa. Check out the climate we are talking about and re-evaluate what we have been taoguht is the norm. White people will readily insist Jesus was white but if he was he sure must have been a burnt red in the climate of Africa. What a revelation. Also, I truly believe Jews to have been of a darken skin tone than they choose to admit. Think about migration to colder climates and what it can do to generations of people. Yet did you know that a lot of Jews have nappy hair and stay in the hair salon weekly. These are things I have learned and contemplated along the way. If you think long enough a lot of things become aparent.
