About the filmmaker Janks Morton:
Assertions, Misconceptions, Half-truths…
By Benjamin Ryan
Hitting the Washington, D.C., singles scene when nearing middle age should be challenge enough for anyone. But divorced 43-year-old Janks Morton believes stereotypes about African-American men have created a list of “qualifiers” that women keep in their back pockets when scrutinizing potential romantic interests. “I have been asked, ‘Have you ever been locked up?’ and ‘You aren’t one of those ‘down low’ brothers, are you?” he says, referring to what men who have relationships with women but also regular sexual encounters with other men on the sly are called. “It’s almost like a civil war between black men and black women.”
Morton, who works in the health care field and is the former owner of an independent record label, has taken it upon himself to rehabilitate the image of the black man in America. He is currently filming a feature-length documentary called What Black Men Think, which will address cultural stereotypes about incarceration, drug use, and HIV.
“There were some disturbing trends that I’ve seen as a casual observer of the African-American community,” he says of his inspiration to create the film, “and that came to light through discussions with my peers. And these perceptions—stereotypes—while they may have had some basis in truth, have been exploited exponentially [and generalized across] the majority of the group. So this movie is a push back on some of those perceptions to get them more in line with what the absolute truths are.”
The closing segment of the trailer for the film on MySpace (www.myspace.com/whatblackmenthink) tells women, “You have been duped. You have been took, hoodwinked, bamboozled, led astray, run amok, hustled, misinformed, misled, had the wool pulled over your eyes.” Morton adds, “You cannot take the minority and portray it as the majority, and that’s what’s happening.”
Frustrated that sources including Oprah Winfrey and The New York Times have impressed upon African-Americans that the down low is a major source of HIV transmission, he hopes to hold verifiable statistics up to the light. While most experts currently agree that evidence to support the widespread existence of the down low is shaky at best, Morton points to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that indicate about half of all black women with HIV became infected through either injection-drug use or sex with an injection-drug user.
“If people are not talking about intravenous-drug use among minority women,” he says about the media’s failure to stress the predominant risk factors for contracting the virus, “then they are doing a disservice to the population.”
While the media sweep the drug epidemic under the rug, Morton says, black men’s sexuality gets blamed for most of the HIV infections among black women. And the image of black men as murderers is heightened by incorrect beliefs among African-Americans that AIDS is the number 1 killer of all black women. (It is the current leading killer of black women between 25 and 34, according to the CDC.)
“There is a mystique about African-American male sexuality that is hyper-portrayed through the media,” Morton says. “Couple that with the demonization of the African-American male through the media, and you have the convergence of the perfect storm when you talk about the DL issue.”
Morton plans to release What Black Men Think in the early spring, distributing DVDs online and through iTunes. (Source | HIV+Mag)

Hi Tafari!
I've been trying to form the words to comment on this for a couple of days without sounding like a complete idiot...let me see if I can do this...
I didn't go to the MySpace link, but I watched the YouTube blurb on your Mindspill-- looked and sounded real good... however, I know the DL things way to real. I used to belong to a very diverse group called Kujifolks, and at first it was with both men and women. We used to talk about EVERYTHING, and one of the subjects we discussed often was the brothers being on the DL, why they did it, and why they didn't tell the sisters...one of the consistent reasons was kind of shocking to me.
A lot of the brothers were good looking, well paid men who had wanted families. They were successful in their careers and educations. They wanted to raise a family. They loved women... as well as loved having sex with men. It went so deep that in the DC area one online friend hung with a large group of DL brothers and their families...they had parties and family barbeques, their kids kicked it, the wives were girlfriends that shopped together...and the men sexed each other. Can you imagine the deceit if the wives ever found out? Oh they had no intention of leaving their wives by the way, and guess what...they had sex not only with each other but with SGL (same gender loving) men period. How dangerous is that? This doesn't exactly convince me that the DL theories are WRONG, aiight?? Especially coming straight from the horses mouths...
As for the wives, I wonder if they have a clue...from what the men said the women were so glad to get a man who had the qualities they were seeking and was decent it wouldn't have made much difference. Some said they gave signals, some said they didn't... all said the wives were happy. I believe it...it's easy to put blinders on IF you choose to..
As for the brothers in prison... I know several who came out and died of AIDS a few years later...was it from gay sex or drug use (shrugs) I'll never know...but whoever they slept with, be it men or women, surely ended up infected...and whoever THEY slept with same thing...
Heroin use is at epidemic levels right now...I can't believe how it's exploded in Denver, lame as it is...So no doubt sisters are dying from AIDS due to their own drug use as well as from HIV infected brothers...man....its scarey...
What EYE don't get is why people refuse to consistently use protection!! I know women who meet a guy, use a condom the first couple of times, then toss them away because they're "in love"... for a month or two...screw that!!! My sisters need to recognize they need to protect themselves ALL the time...LOVE or NO love...same thing for my brothers!!! Nobody is safe anymore...it's not about loving someone, it's about going hand in hand to get tested, and getting the results...and being in a one on one relationship.
Those numbers in that YouTube looked kinda small to me, but who am I (LOL)...well just some of my thoughts...hope I made sense..(((HUGS)))...

Daez, thanks for such a comprehensive reports. I like you do not understand why come people do not use condoms. I mean what will it take for reality sets in. I guess dicks & nipples will have to fall completely off before rates start to drop.
Nowadays men & women are hitting switches so you never know who you are sleeping with etc etc etc. I’m happy that I do not have to deal with this drama today, I will tell you that.
That group in DC sounds off the chain dangerous! I have not problem whatsoever with peoples preferences I mean get your freak on where you must but please disclose your shit so that you limit/decrease any risks.
In regards to prison/jail my word of advice to women who hook up with them is to get the nigga tested! & don't do shit until the test results come back then repeat the process again immediately make his ass wait & masturbate if he is interested in being with you!

WORD!! Unfortunately Tafari, so many women are desperate for the attention and companionship of men that they don't bother to wait for tests...do you have any idea how many women go with their buddies to visit their old man in prison, meet a man, fall for him while he's locked up and it's on from the moment he gets out---NO questions asked???...
I have a husband, haven't lived with or been with him in a lonnng time because he's a playa...I wrote a poem about it, I'ma put a link here if you don't mind,
just to show you my opinion on his game:
http://www.daezhavoo.com/beautifulblackman.html ...he's a ho!! The thing that kills me is he has the nerve to still want to sleep with ME!! DUDE...I ain't even going out like that!!..(LOL!!)...
The DC group was a trip...I'll have to tell you more about it next time we chat! Like you I say do your thang, whatever it may be, but be honest with folks and for Gods sake USE PROTECTION!! From what I was told, disclosure was out of the question for several reasons, and one of the major ones is the Black community does NOT readily accept SGL men. Most of them would never admit to being homosexual at all...which is sad to me...I say be who you are and love yourself...(((HUGS)))

Good article...I don't know why Isaiah did that ish...especially after going on Oprah and saying it was a lil' sumpin between him and Patrick Dempsey...he basically FORCED TR Knight out of the closet...all that wasn't necessary! And then to bring it all up again at the Globes?...I like what you said though...I also like the comment about how many people on the set call Isaiah the N word!
As for my poem...oh hecky yeah it felt sooo good to get that off me! It freed so much space in my mind (and heart) you wouldn't believe it...(((HUGS)))...
