@ The Movies: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (The Minority Report)

Like most adults I am a Harry Potter fan, so it should be no surprise that I rushed to see the Goblet of Fire this weekend with my little sister & fellow Harry Potter fan Sade. Although tickets were available for presale, I choose to take my changes on just showing up & it all worked out by the skin of our teeth. Sade & I got 2 of the last seats together in although the move was showing in 2 large theaters simultaneously. The movie was 2½ hrs long & it was non stop intrigue all the way through.

One thing that really made me fall in love with this installment of the series was the representation of the minority characters. At the beginning of the movie they showed a gang of African Shamen which I thought was great, but as the movie when on, the movie continued to become more colorful. There were far more Black characters in this movie, which was great & I was happy to see Asian, East Indians & other ethic students. This to me made the story more inclusive & really showed some needed diversity in the movie format.

The books (I have not read any) go into more detail about the minority characters according to my little cousin Brooke who is an avid reader. Brooke stated that it was really important to introduce the minority characters in this movie because of the books story line & needing to be somewhat consistent with the facts of the book. I cannot wait to get this on DVD in a few months; it will be worth the wait but in the mean time I may see it again @ the movies.

Although I am a fan, I am not too thrilled with the lexicon of the story such as:

  • Muggle - A person with absolutely no magical powers.
  • Mudblood - Foul name for someone who is Muggle born.

A few of the story’s minority characters:

  • Lee Jordan - Announcer for Hogwarts' Quidditch matches
  • Cho Chang - Harry Potter’s “love interest”
  • Padma & Parvati Patil - Harry & Ron’s dates to the Yule Ball
  • Angelina Johnson - Gryffindor Quidditch Chaser, captain
  • Alicia Spinnet - Gryffindor Quidditch Team
